Calgary Flames deal with Noah Hanifin remains elusive.

Erik Karlsson was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins in a deal that was thought to open up the market for Noah Hanifin. The 26-year-old defenseman has been the subject of offseason trade speculation after informing the Calgary Flames that he was unwilling to extend his contract.

But so far, there's been no indication the Flames will send Hanifin to a new club before training camp opens in a month.

In the most recent Pat Steinberg said the Flames have yet to receive any offers that would suit Hanifin. He said there are too many clubs with limited salary space willing to take on the blue-collar player's $4.95 million salary cap hit.

Steinberg still believes Hanifin is the Flames' top trade chip, citing his status as a top-three defenseman. He believes a defenseman like Hanifin should fetch "multiple strong assets" in a trade. Flames general manager Craig Conroy has set his price and won't budge even if it means Hanifin is still on the roster when the new season begins.
